How did Neurofeedback (NFB) start?
Neurofeedback dates back to the late 50s and early 60s through the work of scientists Dr. Joe Kamiya at the University of Chicago and Dr. Barry Sterman at UCLA. They were studying consciousness and the effect of a reward system on altering brain activity. Years later, Dr Sterman was researching the effects of exposure to lunar lander fuel for NASA. The toxins caused brain instability, such as drowsiness, headaches, followed by hallucinations and seizures, but the subjects who had received Neurofeedback training were immune. Fifty years later, neurofeedback is still part of the astronaut training program.
What type of Neurofeedback do you do?
Infra Low Frequency (ILF) Neurofeedback, also known as the Othmer Method. Named after a pioneering couple in this field, Susan and Siegfried Othmer, who observed that moving the training frequency down reduced the arousal level and anxiety at both an emotional and physical level. In my experience, this is the most effective method. One useful analogy is that of the sea. If you compare brain activity to the movement of the sea, brainwave frequencies are like the waves rolling in, while ILFs resemble the gradual rise and fall of the tide — or the speed and height at which the tide comes in. Alpha-Theta training for the resolution of past trauma and Synchrony training to promote a calm and clear focus will be available soon.
How will I feel during and after treatment?
Many people feel calmer and more relaxed, sometimes people don’t notice any difference, which doesn’t mean the training is not having an effect. Occasionally, you may notice a feeling or emotion which can be helpful to bring up with the practitioner and tends to pass momentarily. In some cases, as the brain responds to treatment during the first few sessions, mild and temporary side effects may occur, though these typically subside within 24 to 48 hours. These might include headache, dizziness, nausea, disturbed sleep, dazed, agitated or brain fog. It’s important to share any symptoms or changes you notice with me, as this helps determine the most effective electrode placements and optimal training frequency and helps to avoid this type of side effect.
What are the contraindications for Neurofeedback therapy?
There are no contraindications for Neurofeedback therapy.
What age do you have to be to have neurofeedback therapy?
Neurofeedback can be helpful at any age – from as young as 2 years old or starting pre-school to advanced age.
Are there any risks?
There are no contraindications for Neurofeedback. The electrodes placed on your head simply monitor the output of brainwave frequency; there is no input into the brain ever. See "How will I feel during and after treatment?" above.
